LUKUMADES to die for!

Lukumades is a very simple Greek sweet that has been around for thousands of years! Even Aristotle has written about these wonderful deep-fried dough balls which traditionally are served with honey and cinnamon!

You can find lukumades at a variety of cafes and restaurants around the country but there is one place in Athens that in my opinion makes the absolute best lukumades! The nice thing is that the place is called just what it sells… “LUKUMADES”. No weirdness!

You will find them at the corner of the central pedestrian street Eolou 21 and Aghias Irinis, very close to Ermou, Athens’s central shopping street but also near Monastiraki train station. This is exactly where they have stood since 2013 and made their huge success. And believe me, they are too easy to find to ignore tasting their goodies!

They serve lukumades (which are as I said deep-fried dough balls) with a variety of toppings and ice creams, and they also offer the opportunity for salty traditional Greek alternatives such as feta cheese and olives.

My favourite combination is lucumades with salted caramel ice cream, crushed biscuits and chocolate sauce… and yes, I am actually salivating as I write this!

Take my advice and visit them on the way back from your trip in Plaka! you will not regret it!

P.S. If you want, you can also try to make these goodies at home by following a recipe, OR… buy a ready-made Lukumades mix from a Greek supermarket so you can enjoy them at home!
