An interview with the Athens-based clothing line “Comely Bop”

Untraveled wants to take this page one step further and get inspired by young greek creators who produce amazing products which we would like to see more of. We start this series of interviews with Irini and Vasia and an interview about their Athens-based clothing line “Comely Bop”.

You are a new and up and coming Greek clothing line. What would you say is the thing that sets you apart and how would you describe your client?

Our brand was created out of our desire to make clothes that represent our own personal style and our perspective on female fashion. We have always loved jazz music, the movies, the stars and the taste of the ‘30s-’50s and this is where all our ideas come from. Fashion trends come and go and there are times that we might be influenced by what is out there too, but not to the extend of changing our idea about how our clothing line should look like. In the same way, in our opinion modern women should find their own personal style and dress in a way that reflects who they are and how they feel about fashion. This is the kind of women that buy our brand. Our clients have their own personal style, are proud of their bodies and are looking for clothes that are feminine while at the same time comfortable to wear in their everyday life.

Comely Bop is an interesting name. How did you decide for it to be your company name and does it mean something special?

As we were looking for a name for our brand, we thought that it would be wise to find something that represents the brand but also gives a little glimpse into what this brand is about:
The word “Bop” stands both for jazz music (bebop) & dance. As designers, we are inspired by old time movies, actresses, jazz dancers from the 30s to 60s as many “cool” things were happening back in those days. The word “Comely” is a very nostalgic way for saying “charming”. So our “Comely Bop” is our own “charming” version of the vintage elegance in a modern world.

We know that you have sold clothes in Sweden and that you are appearing in different events there. What is your connection to Sweden and do you have any favorite spots there?

We love everything about Sweden really. We love how women dress, we love the architecture, the furniture, the second hand shops like the “Old Touch”, the hand made candy at “Pärlans Konfektyr”. Our favourite time of the year to visit is summer because the weather is usually good and so people have drinks and enjoy themselves in the sun, go to parks, have picnics. We like enjoying the view of Stockholm city from the cliff Skinnarviksberget and going to Folkbaren for drinks.
We first visited Sweden for a Swing dance event in Stockholm (we are both professional Lindy Hop Dancers now) and since then we have been visiting every year. Our brand is sold every year at Herrang Dance Camp (Lindy Hop dance event outside Stockholm) and this year we also had our clothes at Snowball (Lindy Hop event in Stockholm).

You are living in Athens and as Untraveled is trying to show of Greece’s and Athen’s lesser known spots it would be fun if you could share with us your favorite places in Athens!

Athens is a very interesting city to live in nowadays. We usually go out at Metaxourgio which is one of the most upcoming and hipster neighbourhoods of Athens. We enjoy the jazz lives at Kerameikos and the cocktails at Ble Papagalos veranda. Our favourite place to eat is Thessaloi, a very traditional Greek taverna to enjoy ouzo and very good local food. Great places for coffee are Tailor Made at Agia Irini square and Taf coffee shop at Benaki str. During summer, we always watch movies at one of the open air cinemas (Cine Paris or Cine Thisio are both great choices) or climb up Filopappou hill to enjoy the views of the city.

Finally, where can people find you in person or online to take a look at your clothing line?

To reach us visit our FB page or our shop on ETSY where you can make your online purchases. We also receive emails at hello@comelybop.com. For a closer look at our new collection you may visit Anthologia Humana (Chalandri, Athens), Dna stars (Lekka 2, Athens) or Herrang Dance Camp (at Herrang, in Sweden) during July.

Thank you girls!
