Trikala Korinthias

The mountain village of Trikala Korinthias, 144 km north by car from Athens, actually consist of three parts which are located at three different heights. First we find Kato Trikala at 900m up Mount Kyllini. In the center of Kato Trikala there is a nice paved square where you can sit in the shadow of two very old maple trees and grab a coffee in one of the traditional taverns and coffee-shops. On the square there is also a church from 1697. It is called Agios Dimitrios and has beautiful wall paintings.
In the middle we find Mesaia Trikala and last but not least, highest up, Ano Trikala that is located 1,100m above sea level. Ano Trikala has many stone houses and churches preserved from the 16-and 18th century, such as the church Agios Nikolaos wich also has some wall paintings from the 10th century.

The way up is very easy on the eyes and winds up the mountains. Amazing views are offered all the time and make you want to stop the car and take out your camera. Or why not stop by the roadside and pick some fresh rosemary. The road’s quality is good and there is no problem meeting oncoming traffic.

Trikala Korinthias has been a famous destination for greeks for a long time. The rumor even spread over the Mediterranean Sea to the king of Egypt during the 1950’s and he repeatedly came here. Situated in the mountains, the climate is much cooler but also drier which was something the king appreciated. At this time there were no roads up the mountain so it is easy to sympathise for the pack donkeys and servants who had to go up all the way by foot carrying luggages etc. on their back and a king in the palanquin.

In the summer the temperature here reaches around 20-25 degrees celsius and during the winter there are freezing temperatures and a lot of snow. Just a drive from Ano Trikala, about 20 minutes away, you can visit the “Zireia center”, run by the Greek Alpine Club and a popular place for winter sport lovers. Here there are ski slopes for younger kids, for beginners as well as for the more experienced. If you get tired of the slopes and want to try something else, there are snowmobiles and sleds for rent. You can also go cross-country skiing. At the center there is a chalet that serves as a restaurant where you can eat and drink.
If you rent a snowmobile (or 4*4) you can get to the lake Limnidasiou and the Cave of Hermes which ae located nearby. The legend says that this cave was the birth place of the God Hermes who was the messenger among the gods. The cave has both stalactites and stalagmites. The landscape around the ski center also offers trails for hikers but also for mountainbikes and 4*4.

There are many fine hotels in Trikala Korinthias and they almost always offer a view towards the majestic mountain tops and the valleys surrounding the village.
